Üsküdar, situated on the Asian shore of the Bosphorus, is a district that weaves together centuries of history, culture, and tradition. With its roots stretching back thousands of years, Üsküdar stands as a vibrant and bustling area, resonating with the echoes of ancient civilisations, but with many modern touches.

Founded in the 7th century BC by Greek colonists from Megara, Üsküdar predates Byzantium (now Istanbul) on the opposite shore.
Originally named Chrysopolis (meaning “Golden City”), it had ties to Agamemnon and Chryseis’ son, Chryses, familiar names from Homer.
Over time, it transformed into Scutari, a name it retained until the birth of the Turkish Republic.

Üsküdar has been a rather conservative cultural centre on the Anatolian side of Istanbul since Ottoman times, its historic landmarks, delightful miniature mosques and dergahs whispering of devotion and displaying much in the way of architectural splendour.

The district’s skyline, adorned with tepe (hills), frames a deep and open valley that gazes out to the sea.
Üsküdar, in addition to its other virtues, is a transport hub for Istanbul.
Ferries crisscross the Bosphorus here, connecting Üsküdar to Eminönü, Karaköy, Kabataş, and the Bosphorus hinterland.

The Marmaray metro line runs beneath the Bosphorus, linking Üsküdar to Gebze (Asian side) and Halkali (European side).
Buses run right along the shore of the Bosphorus, reaching as far north as Anadolu Kavağı in Beykoz district.
Must-See Üsküdar gems:
The Maiden’s Tower is built on a tiny offshore islet and has witnessed centuries of maritime history.
Çamlıca Hill affords panoramic views of Istanbul’s skyline, the Bosphorus, and the Sea of Marmara.
Üsküdar boasts many 16th-century Mosques and Fountains, architectural marvels that breathe elegance and charm from an age that has passed.

With its deep antiquity and unrivalled transport links, cafe society and cultural attractions, Üsküdar is a living bridge connecting past and present, where the ancient and the modern fuse and seem to capture the spirit of this whole magical city.
